Important Class information

Homework- Homework will be given out each week on a Friday. It will consist of one piece of English or grammar work, one piece of Maths work and a set of spellings. We expect completed homework to be returned on Tuesday.

Spellings- spellings are difficult to learn, especially when children try and cram learning them into a half an hour slot on one day, this does not result in effective learning or embedding into long term memory. Instead, what we recommend is that children spend no more than 5 minutes practicing half of their spellings, then return to them later but focus on the other half for 5 minutes. They would then do the same the following day. This repeated, short-burst learning has been proved to help children in retaining the spelling pattern.

PE- In the autumn term, out PE lesson will take place on a Monday. In Spring term, it will take place on a Thursday. In Summer term, it will take place on a Wednesday and this will be in the form of swimming lessons.

It is vital that children are prepared for this and have an appropriate kit with them on these days.

Year 5 SPRING 2020

Class Activities

Our Project in Autumn term 1 has been Alchemy Island.

Within this project, we have gained a lot of new knowledge and skills, specifically in science, music and computing! We learned how to use photo editing software to cut and layer images to create our own portals to fantasy lands. We also learned about reversible and irreversible changes and mixed hydrogen peroxide with yeast, the mixture created a foam which spilled out everywhere, this was an irreversible change! We also analysed how a super-absorbent polymer changed when we put it in water. It grew from 3mm in width to 20mm in width! As well as this, we learned about the factors that affect dissolving and discovered that the warmer a liquid is, the faster something will dissolve in it. We also discovered that our jug of water took 50 tea spoons of sugar to become saturated! In music, we learned how to use a graphic score to create simple musical notation, how to use audacity to record music, how to write lyrics which fit with the rhythm of the music and we performed some compositions that we had made! Finally, we used paper-mache to create a board game-style model of Alchemy Island, making sure that we included all of the examples of human and physical geography from the map.
